One of the enjoyment with travelling to Iceland is the driving. I really liked driving around in the rented SUV on the dirt roads up and down mountains and through rivers. We got one flat tire and a broken bearing in a wheel though so I’m not sure our car actually was built for this. We rented a Toyota RAV4 but if we did it again we probably should have rented a even more robust jeep. You will definitely need a four wheel drive car. The road you see on the picture above is actually a good road. This road goes in and out of Landmannalaugar, an amazing drive.
