I was asked to photograph an event in Malmö called Rolling stories this past weekend. I have photographed for the group behind this event before, they are the people behind Transit that you can see pictures from on my portfolio page. I don’t really know how to describe what it was. It’s some kind of installation / theater thing that takes place on the streets. It’s really fun to photograph.
Unfortunately the weather was a bit too good. It took place in the center of the city but since Sweden was like a tropical country last Saturday most people were at the beach and the light was also really harsh. But, given the circumstances I’m quite happy with the result. You can see a whole bunch of pictures from the event here.
I like shooting these kind of events. I see it as a challenge to do the best of the situation and staying alert to capture the moments. So what if the light is harsh and coming in from behind the subject, sometimes there’s nothing you can do about that and the important thing is that there is a moment captured in the image.
I shot these pictures with my Nikon D3. I had it set to auto-iso with the lowest shutter speed set to 1/500 to be sure that I got sharp pictures even if the subjects were moving fast. I switched between my 17-35 mm lens and my 70-200 mm lens. I also had a flash with me that I used for a while to fill out the shadows in the faces but I really don’t like the look of those images. I have been experimenting a lot with fill light flash but I can’t get it to look nice and natural. I actually think the fill light slider in Lightroom does a better job.
The same event takes place the comming weekend, so if you are in Malmö go check it out. And then the weekend after that there is another event taking place arranged by the same group that I’m also photographing. You can read more about it all here (in swedish).
Inte de lättaste ljusförhållandena som sagt, men trots det riktigt fina bilder!
